Gary Rosen was a teacher of mine and a politician I happen to like-- this was a fun cover I did back in '08 which was reacting to his near constant sign holding for the election in all kind of weather. Gary also proposed rubber heated sidewalks at some time, which is not as strange as it sounds.
In the 50s Worcester bought some surplus army trucks with flame throwers attached-- with the plan of using these to plow roads in the winter. I don't know if it was the resultant exploding cars or the high cost of flammable liquid but the plan was abandoned.
