Whether you are a student of the craft, a working professional or a casual fan, this course will take you through the periods of comic art with a look at the turning points which have led to comics becoming one of the world's most popular art forms.
In this class you will read dozens of comics in PDF form that capture the essence of the period we're discussing each week. You'll SEE the evolution of storytelling as creators learned their way and publishers pushed their audiences.
Class 1 - THE GOLDEN AGE July 13, 2015
With World War II comic sales were in the millions and everyone read them as cheap fun entertainment.
Class 2- POST WWII and PRE-CODE HORROR July 20, 2015
More and more publishers pushed the envelope in terms of outrageous content leading to parents groups and congress to investigate the correlations between Comic Book and Juvenile Crime!
Class 3- THE SILVER AGE
Class 4- THE BRONZE AGE
Those new sophisticated readers generated by Marvel Comics soon became working professionals in the comics field leading to a whole new level of comic art-- Comics as Relevant entertainment! Batman hunted Nazis, Green Arrow's Sidekick got addicted to drugs and the Green Lantern faced racism head on in the swinging 70s. Frank Miller reinvigorated DAREDEVIL as a film noir style comic, and Batman became the Dark Knight of a future apocalyptic Gotham City.
Class 5- Comics Grow Up
From Alan Moore's SWAMP THING to Dan Clowes EIGHTBALL comics were now a respected form of entertainment. We'll read some seminal classics of story and art.
Class 6- THE GRAPHIC NOVEL
Comics become full on literature with Graphic Novels by Will Eisner, Darwyn Cooke and many others including the japanese classics like ADOLF!
This intensive six week session is loaded with information, and each week we'll have a lively discussion of what we just read as well as a look at other creators from the era you should check out.
It's a fast, fun all levels informative series.
