Cold Hard Reality is sometimes hard to face.

American's have short attention spans.
We forgot Al Qaeda attacked us in 1993 with an attempt to bring down the World Trade Center in New York.    We have short attention spans.  We work 2-3 jobs to help make ends meet.  We elect our leaders because someone is cooler than someone else, never mind the qualifications.

In 2001 when Al Qaeda got lucky and killed 3000 men women and children on Sept 11th -- and that's what happened, they got lucky.  We aren't dealing with scholars here, we're dealing with thugs.  Misguided thugs.

Like the Boston Bombers, two misguided young men who were willing to take the lives of innocents as payment for the damage the US has inflicted in other parts of the world.

The trouble is we have short attention spans.  We forget.

When the attacks of 9/11 happened there were talking heads on the television saying America had now grown up, that the age of reality TV and celebrity gossip would come to an end.  That with this horrible attack that we would no longer be distracted by the nonsense of the past.

Thirteen years later Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty are ratings hits.

We have short attention spans.

Last week a commercial airliner disappeared.  A tragedy for every family who had a loved one on board.  It's very likely that one of the two pilots for whatever reason decided to end his own life and those of everyone else on the plane too.  Hard to comprehend really, but possible.

Equally possible is the idea that this plane was somehow diverted somewhere into the middle east where it could be outfitted with any of the missing nuclear devices from the former USSR and it's planned to deliver it's warhead on a major target.  The stuff of a Tom Clancy novel?  Maybe.  But then again so was the idea of flying commercial jets into a skyscraper.

I take solace in the fact that minds immeasurably superior to my own will look into these possibilities, and do their best to keep us safe.
