Fathom Events did a live double feature simulcast of FRANKENSTEIN (1931) and THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) last night at theaters across the country-- and we attended the screening at Blackstone Valley, literally 5 mins from us.
I've seen both these films likely 100 times and I have to say I felt like I saw them both for the first time. We sat down low and close making the big screen effect even more so and it was spectactular with the booming sound and the almost full house.
Watching the two films as a whole works-- the sequel starts only a few hours after the end of the original and while some of the dialogue is off the mark and a bit of the plot ridiculous (as if the idea of a dead man coming back to life isn't silly enough-- why do mad scientists install a lever designed to destroy everything if it's pulled?) but the cinematography, the art direction and the makeup is stellar.
Ditto the casting of virtually every member of both casts and the bit players too. James Whale is my favorite director of all time for a reason-- and these two films are it.
