Comic Art Classes -- Online and In Class




Many of you have expressed an interest in developing your graphic novel skills-- or looking to get work in the comics industry.  I want to point out that Emerson is now offering online classes with an eye on professional level studies in the field.  Online classes were something I was always skeptical about not being 'real' classes, and I have to say that opinion has changed.

We've worked hard to make this online experience as engaging as possible, we have an hour "live" meet during the week and then both the transcript and the lesson plan are posted for students who were not able to attend, making it ideal for anyone with a busy schedule.

Best of all is the fact that all of the comic book publishers now expect creators to be able to provide their work digitally, which is something we do each week.   It's the closest thing to working with publishers that you might find.

This is the next class I'm doing there:

CE0351 Introduction to Comic Art - online course
Ten-session course, offered fall semester, $650.00
(Required for certificate candidates)
Participants will focus on an in-depth survey of the continuing evolution of comic art over the past one hundred years. With an emphasis on the influential cartoonists who have mastered the ability to communicate though sequential illustrations, participants will learn to see beyond what they expect from a graphic novel, in order to discover new possibilities.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE TAKEN THIS CLASS PREVIOUSLY, I'VE CHANGED IT DRAMATICALLY so consider taking it again.  This time we'll do less reading and more studying of the art styles and see what you might want to incorporate into your own style.  Struggling to find a personal style is something that is very common, and I think this will help a great deal.  They'll also be extensive work on the advancement of storytelling in the various genres of graphic novels.

So, if you've thought about REALLY getting into it, really thought about improving your skills, give one of these classes a try.

For those of you in the Central MA area-- WAM also offers a class I do on Comic Book Art-- it's less intensive and more relaxed but still a good way to get your feet wet if you aren't ready to commit to a full on college level class;


Comic Art

Learn how to lay out and draw a comic from beginning to end, combining words and pictures to tell a story. Look at the work of other comic artists from R. Crumb to Frank Miller and Marjane Satrapi for inspiration.
Recommended Supplies
  • 60lb or better drawing paper 11x14 or larger (11x17 recommended). Recommend Bristol but regular drawing paper will do as well.
  • Pencil - HB Lead
  • #2 round brush or brush pen (wait until class time to purchase as I will have several to discuss and we won't need until the second half of class)
  • Sketchbook for notes and thumbnails-recommend small carry size but it's up to the artist
Optional Supplies
  • Canson Brand Comic Art Paper (11x17) its more expensive than regular Bristol but it's already ruled
We will discuss the use of non-traditional materials as the course carries on.
