GREAT BATMAN ARTISTS #8: Don Newton

Don Newton got his start in comics drawing illustrations for Fan-zines-- self published magazines put out by fans which celebrated comics.

His favorite character by far was Captain Marvel (Shazam) but a close second was Batman.  Eventually getting pro work for Charlton Comics on THE PHANTOM it was a natural for him to be put on Batman when he came to DC Comics.

His style was a combination of Will Eisner and Neal Adams, great shadow and form but with an edge on shadow and mood.  His version of Batman dominated the 80s and had he lived (he died of a heart attack at the young age of 49) he would have continued to change the way Batman was portrayed.

TOMORROW: Batman through the prism of Dick Tracy!
