GREAT BATMAN ARTISTS #2: Marshall Rogers
Marshall Rogers did a short run on Detective Comics in the 1970s written by Steve Englehart that has been called the definitive version of the character-- and I would heartily agree with it.
Taking the dynamics of Adams, the Mood of Kane and Robinson and the twisted cartoonism of Dick Sprang Rogers created a Batman that was completely his own-- and no one has come close to touching it.
While Neal Adams is often imitated, and imitated well by a number of artists, Rogers style was so unique that it's untouchable.
Batman's world should be a twisted nightmarish place-- and that's exactly what Rogers did, unlike anyone else save for one-- and we'll talk about him the day after tomorrow.
TOMORROW: The Great Batman Artists Numero Uno.
